KarajanandtheBerlinPhilharmonictouredtheworldfrequentlyandto greatacclaim.In1955,theorchestramadeitsfirstappearanceinNewYork andinanationaltouroftheUnitedStates,allunderKarajan』s direction,returningthefollowingyearandinmanysubsequentseasons. KarajanalsovisitedtheUnitedStateswiththePhilharmoniaOrchestraof London.Inthefallof1955,hetouredtheUnitedStateswiththe PhilharmoniaOrchestra,playing24concerts. 如果說從影響力、行政能力、音樂改革這些方面來看，廿世紀古典樂壇上最重要的指揮 家，除了卡拉揚以外，非他人莫屬。 卡拉揚是一九０八年出生於奧地利的薩爾茲堡，他的祖父和父親都是醫生，而他父親還 曾經在薩爾茲堡的莫札特紀念管弦樂團裡吹奏單簧管。多少因為家庭背景關係，卡拉揚 自小就擁有的音樂天分，便能受到不錯的引導，三歲彈琴、五歲登台演出，算來也是一 位神童。 為什麼會擁有這樣的天分，卡拉揚自己也很難說清楚，他說：「我自己也不知道為什麼 ，但是，我非常好學，學什麼就一定要學會，練什麼就非練好不可，並且排除雜念，專 心作自己的事。」或許，這一種不服輸以及專注的個性，也成為日後卡拉揚成功的條件 之一。 然而，真正讓卡拉揚接觸並且挖掘他的指揮天分的人，正是當時薩爾茲堡的一位重要人 士------包姆加特納-----他認為卡拉揚永遠不會滿足於用十根手指頭創造音樂，這也就 是說，不論演奏哪一種樂器都很難完全表達出卡拉揚內心所呈現的音樂意念，也因此卡 拉揚和指揮事業，有了最初的開始。但是，卡拉揚的父親並不希望他以音樂維生，反而 希望他有個比較實際的行業，所以他進入了維也納的一所技術學校。但是同時，卡拉揚 繼續和大鋼琴家霍夫曼學習鋼琴，結果很有趣的是，三個月後，霍夫曼又對他說：「你 對音樂有敏銳的感覺和豐富的想像力，如果想充分表達他們，除非你有八隻手……」意 思就是說，卡拉揚必須當一位指揮家，用他的腦和豐富的想像力，調和百人的大樂團， 才能創造完美的音樂，也因此，卡拉揚下定決心，要以音樂當作一輩子的事業！ 後來，卡拉揚在烏爾姆的一個小劇院，紮紮實實的磨練了七年，當時這個小劇院非常克 難，樂團只有廿一人，佈景、臨時演員、服裝道具，幾乎樣樣都得自己動手，也因此， 累積他雄厚的歌劇指揮及製作經驗。一九三五年，廿七歲的卡拉揚接任當時德國亞琛歌 劇院的首席指揮，接著擔任音樂總監，成為當時德國境內最年輕的音樂總監。二次大戰 後，卡拉揚遇到一位影響他一生的貴人，當時EMI的製作人華爾特?李格。李格在聽過卡 拉揚和維也納愛樂的排練後，深深感動，於是邀請卡拉揚和維也納愛樂為EMI灌錄音樂， 甚至還特別為卡拉揚錄音之用而創立了愛樂管弦樂團。李格便曾經說過：「觀看卡拉揚
